Tarnishing is an unavoidable characteristic of carbon steel. A few drops of any high-quality oil or silicon treatment applied to the blade with a soft all-cotton cloth will provide great protection. A decent wax also provides excellent protection. Check your knives frequently for potential problem areas. If any stains occur, use a regular metal cleanser or polish to remove them. Most stainless steels used in knife blades are not rustproof, although they are rust or stain resistant. As a result, stainless steel blades, particularly many of the new high carbon stainless steels, should still be kept clean and wiped dry after use. Knives and leather sheaths should be stored separately when not in use since leather absorbs moisture and can rust your blade.
