Richard Mithen, who holds a PhD in plant genetics from the University of East Anglia, spent four years collecting, conserving, and using wild crop cousins in South Central Africa. He then led a plant genetics research group at the John Innes Centre, where he was in charge of introducing the high-glucoraphanin (GR) trait from the wild Brassica villosa into commercial broccoli lines using marker-assisted wide-crossing techniques. Richard's growing interest in the interaction between plant science and human health research led him to the University of Nottingham, where he was appointed Professor of Crop Science in 1999. In 2003, he joined Quadram Institute Bioscience (formerly the Institute of Food Research), where he led the Food and Health programme. He later joined the University of Auckland as Professor of Human Nutrition at the Liggins Institute and Chief Scientist for the New Zealand High Value Nutrition National Science Challenge. His primary research interests include human nutrition and the role of plant-specific metabolites in promoting and maintaining human health.
