Introduction

My first memories of dogs are of my grandfather and his border collie, Flash, herding sheep back to the croft. I was always charmed by their strong relationship. My own personal bond with our canine companions began when a forward-thinking doctor advised to my parents that a dog could help me at school. You know, I am dyslexic, and I suffered in standard schools. In the 1970s and 1980s, being different was not celebrated. Despite my parents' painstaking efforts to get me the aid I needed, I still found school to be a horrible experience. So what happened when that doctor indicated to my parents that a dog would help? It marked the beginning of a lifelong connection. Since then, I've always owned dogs, and they've remained at my side through thick and thin. Through school and then into the business world, where I've spent the last 30 years. While I was relieved to be out of school, adjusting to corporate life was not without its challenges. I persevered and was fortunate to have a happy and successful career in the corporate sector, following a route that assisted others in their learning and professional growth. Finally, I believe that my previous struggles with school education have helped me become a better educator. Show Less
