In a workshop tucked away in the charming neighbourhood of La Merced in Mexico City's bustling capital in 1936, alebrijes first appeared. The first alebrijes were created here by Pedro Linares. A skillful craftsman renowned for his work on piatas, carnival masks. And papier-mâché Judas figures. Linares not only created these gorgeous beings. But he also came up with the word "alebrijes" itself. Pedro Linares first displayed his artistic works in crowded neighbourhood markets like Mercado de La Merced. But he was in for a very special surprise from fate. When the proprietor of an art gallery in Cuernavaca accidentally came upon Linares' work one fateful day. Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo were immediately drawn to the captivating works. As a result of their admiration for Linares' work and patronage. Rivera and Kahlo commissioned additional alebrijes, preserving this distinctive custom. Diego Rivera claimed that only Linares had the amazing talent to bring the visionary figures he imagined to life. These outstanding pieces of art, which Linares painstakingly created for Rivera, can be seen today, bearing witness, in the Anahuacalli Museum in Mexico City. Show Less
